HMRC has outlined plans to launch a new digital platform for alcoholic drinks producers in March 2025, with the aim of streamlining the payment processes for alcohol duty.

Following a recent announcement on the discontinuation of the spirits duty stamps scheme, the government has shared further details about the new digital service, which was first announced in 2022. It is part of HMRC’s wider plan to update the alcohol taxation system, which includes the new duty rates introduced last August.

HMRC said the new system will “make administrative requirements quicker and easier to manage, and replace the many paper and online forms currently used for different types of alcoholic products”.

The website will allow UK producers to apply for approval, submit their monthly duty returns and make payments online. The monthly return will cover all alcoholic products they produce across all their production premises.

Until the new digital system is launched next year, producers will be required to continue using the current payment system.
