John Hutton, a highly respected figure in the UK wine trade and former MD of Fields, Morris & Verdin (FMV), has passed away.

Hutton enjoyed a long and influential career spanning several major businesses, including Hedges & Butler and Fields Wine Merchants, before going on to lead FMV. He also served as a director at Berry Bros & Rudd.

Widely regarded for his leadership and integrity, Hutton played a key role in shaping supplier and customer relationships across the trade. He was particularly influential within London’s restaurant scene, where he built long-standing partnerships and friendships throughout his career.

Colleagues and peers remember him not only for his commercial acumen, but also for his commitment to supporting teams and mentoring those coming through the industry. Outside of work, Hutton was known for his warmth and generosity, as well as a love of music, particularly the guitar.

A service of thanksgiving will be held at Hereford Cathedral on Monday 7 September at 12pm.

He is survived by his wife Sarah and three sons, Mark, William and Patrick.
