Awin Barratt Siegel Wine Agencies partner Elliot Awin has become the first person with a pacemaker to row 3,000 miles solo across the Atlantic.

Awin, who set off from La Gomera on his boat ‘Pacemaker’ 44 days ago, arrived at the finish line in Antigua at around 10.15am (GMT) on Friday January 26.

Awin was diagnosed with Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome and paroxysmal atrial fibrillation about nine years ago and he had a pacemaker fitted in 2020. Awin set up a charity called Wave Wrangler to support those living with an arrhythmia.

At the time of crossing the line, he had raised almost £150,000 for the British Heart Foundation.

When he crossed the line, Awin set off the customary flares and said: “Wow, that was exhilarating.”

Elsewhere in the drinks industry, the co-founder of The Isle of Wight Distillery, which makes Mermaid Gin, also completed the race. The Mermaid Atlantic Team finished on January 25.  The three team members, all native to the Isle of Wight, were Xavier Baker, co-founder of The Isle of Wight Distillery, Chris Manion, owner of i-surf and Paul Berry, Ventnor longshoreman and firefighter.
