Tesco wine boss Dan Jago has spoken of his “delight” at support from the trade after his return to the retailer – and says he is pleased to be back.

Jago will rejoin the BWS department in the new role of category director – group wine, reporting to commercial director Kari Daniels. He returns after being suspended from his position as global wine, beer and spirits boss last October.

Jago was told to step aside while the retailer investigated a £250 million accounting black hole, but has been reinstated and will resume his nine-year Tesco career next week.

Gavin Warburton, who oversaw the department in Jago’s absence, has been promoted to UK category director for BWS.

Jago told OLN: “I have been really warmed and delighted by all the messages from across this brilliant industry. It’s great to be back at work – there’s lots to do.”

Leading suppliers have welcomed the decision. Paul Schaafsma, UK and Ireland head at Accolade Wines, said: “I’m delighted Dan has been reinstated. He is a leading figure in the trade and deserves the trade’s support. He has achieved a great deal for the industry throughout his career and I look forward to welcoming him back.”

A second supplier said: “Dan has always been a great person to deal with and he’s a real asset to Tesco.”

Another producer said Jago was returning at a difficult time. It said: “Tesco is under a great deal of pressure and the department has had a tough year. Many people in the trade were certainly surprised at events over the last year and how they have turned out. Tesco has got a lot of work ahead to rebuild its image.”
