D.O. Cava has announced that all Guarda Superior Cavas will now be made with fully organic production.
The regulatory board explained that beginning with the 2022 harvest, all Guarda Superior Cavas – including Reserva, Gran Reserva and Paraje Calificado categories – have been produced exclusively from 100% organic-certified vineyards.
This means that all Cavas de Guarda Superior launched from this year will be 100% organic.
On the process, the regulatory board explained that the EU-backed certification ensures that no chemicals have been used in the vineyards for at least three years, verified by documentation and regular inspections.
The D.O. has also been supported by the Catalan Council for Organic Agriculture Production, which awarded its own certification.
Following the shift, nearly 110,000 ha of certified organic vineyards are within the D.O. Cava region.
The transition to organic production has resulted in increased sales, said the board.
“In 2024, sales of organic Cavas soared to 37.3 million bottles, marking a 15.24% growth from the previous year. This trend reflects a growing consumer preference for wines that are as kind to the planet as they are delightful to the palate,” it explained.
Looking forward, Javier Pagés, president of D.O. Cava, said: “The future of Cava lies in continuing to focus on quality and the value of the Cava brand.”
D.O. Cava continues to be the Spanish D.O. with the highest exports, with international sales of more than 70%.
