The Co-op is expanding its vegan wine offering to 100 lines by the end of the year to meet customer demand, with eight new lines launching next month.
The Co-op was the UK’s first food retailer to label allergen and ingredients on its wines and it said it has been working closely with winemakers globally to pioneer the use of vegan-friendly fining agents to filter the wines.
Of the eight newcomers to arrive in stores from 12 February, one is a Spanish Rioja, Gran Familia Rioja Tinto (£5.99).
Simon Cairns, category trading manager for Co-op wines, said: “We are anticipating vegan wines to pick up momentum throughout 2018 following the growth in 2017, so our range will be expanding throughout the year to offer greater choice to our vegan shoppers and we will continue to challenge suppliers to make wines vegan, where they can without affecting the attributes of the liquid.”
Social media channels have highlighted an 84% increase in mentions of vegan wine and food year-on-year, according to the Co-op.
