Chivas Brothers has launched the Chivas Extra 13 collection of four 13 year-old whiskies aged in four different casks, including a first for Scotch whisky: a Mexican Tequila finish.

The new collection, which is inspired by pioneering whisky blenders and founding brothers James and John Chivas, aims to show how the casks used for the maturation or finishing process imparts its own unique characteristics onto the Chivas blend. The casks used are Oroloro Sherry, Rum, American Rye and Tequila.

Sandy Hyslop, director of blending at Chivas, said: “The Extra 13 collection represents new territory for Chivas as we continue to open up the world of Scotch whisky to new audiences and fresh experiences. At Chivas we believe that blended is better – and nowhere is this more evident than with our new collection, which blends exceptional Scotch with a diverse, internationally-inspired palette of flavours.”

Chivas Extra 13 Olorosso Sherry Cask is said to deliver a richer finish, with hints of sweet ripe pears in syrup, vanilla caramel, cinnamon sweets and almonds.

Chivas Extra 13 Rum Cask has rich flavours of orange, “sweet apricot jam and honey”, while Chivas Extra 13 American Rye Cask finish delivers “an exceptionally smooth and mellow finish” with flavours of sweet orange and creamy milk chocolate. And finally, Chivas Extra 13 Tequila Cask delivers a “sweet and round finish” with hints of grapefruit and pineapple.

Each new expression features artwork by street artist Greg Gossel.

The quartet will roll out across select markets from this month with the Rum Cask variant available exclusively via travel retail outlets from July.
