The president for DO Cava has said the main production area in the Penedès region is expecting a good quality harvest, following three years of persistent drought.

The upward turn is a result of spring rains, which have mitigated further drought.

As such, the regulatory council’s technical services are forecasting an “excellent quality” harvest.

The grape harvest will not start as early as the last two years. However, the grapes are expected to have good acidity and a phenolic composition suitable for Cava wine, thanks to a cool May and June with occasional rainfall.

The president of DO Cava, Javier Pagés, complimented the winegrowers for their persistence.

Pagés said: “The winegrowers have worked hard, and have succeeded in recovering the vineyards, by pruning them respectfully, and taking into account the requirements of each plant after the drought and the successive periods of extreme heat.”

The president also spoke about the quality of Cava and emphasised the consolidation of the highest-quality category – Guarda Superior Cavas.

He said: “The future of Cava lies in continuing to focus on quality and the value of the Cava brand.”
