Unite union has announced strike action will take place later this month over job disputes at Diageo’s Cameronbridge distillery in Scotland.
The union said around 100 members will take strike action, starting on September 28, at the Fife facility. Successive days of action will be carried out by distillation and process controllers, distillery and machine operators, technicians, quality control analysts, process chemists and engineers, until October 15, the union said.
Unite said it believes the targeted industrial action will “bring production to a standstill at Cameronbridge”.
According to the union, the dispute is based on Diageo’s plans to cut hundreds of jobs across its operations in Scotland, as part of global restructuring proposals.
Unite general secretary, Sharon Graham said: “Unite has repeatedly warned Diageo that there is no justification for slashing hundreds of jobs across its operations when it is raking in hundreds of millions of profit. We are backing our members at Cameronbridge all the way in their fight for jobs, pay and conditions.”
A Diageo spokesperson said the company is disappointed by the move.
“We are disappointed by the decision to strike,” the spokesperson said. “The proposal to remove up to ten roles at Cameronbridge Distillery is necessary as we maintain reduced production volumes to protect the long-term competitiveness of our business. We remain committed to engaging constructively.”
