The biggest wine tasting in the history of Bristol is just days away and there is still time for members of the trade to register.

More than 600 different wines from every major producing region in the world will be poured for buyers at the Bristol Museum & Art Gallery on September 18.

SITT, the Specialist Importers Trade Tasting, has been running in the spring and autumn in London and Manchester for many years now.

But this year the organisers decided to move the autumn tasting from Manchester to Bristol in order to furnish the good folk of the West Country with a wealth of wine to sample without having to leave their heartland.

More than 40 of the UK’s best specialist importers have signed up to pour their wines on September 18 in Bristol.

They include generic bodies like Sud de France, Wines of Hungary and Wines of Brasil, while established suppliers such as Hatch Mansfield, Mentzendorff and Inverarity Morton will line up alongside a huge number of boutique distributors with a wide range of specialities.

Wine expert Angela Mount will host a masterclass on how to bring new trends to the West Country, while Peter McCombie MW will wax lyrical about why we will all be drinking Hungarian wines this year.

McCombie will host another class on Lebanon, while Christopher Cooper’s masterclass is simply called #generationwine. It will see him examine trends among millennial consumers and offer insights into how businesses can appeal to this generation.

“Bristol and the South West are showing exponential growth of innovative independent retailers and the festival scene is really interesting for both drinks retailers and drinks brands,” said organiser Judy Kendrick. “New product trends tend to start in London, so SITT is a great place for all visitors to discover new wines and a few new spirits too.”

She added: “SITT has always been an essential day in the tasting calendar and now, with the added value Agile Media is offering to visitors and exhibitors, it will be the best day’s work for everyone this year. The new features will make SITT even more of a business event than ever, offering market data, business seminars and tasting workshops. As a visitor, where else are you offered a free day that not only gives you an introduction to some of the most innovative and relevant products on the market today, but also helps you with business advice and strategy?

“An independent retailer or restaurant has to have wines that are different from the major groups. It’s essential for the lifeblood of their business. They also have to have knowledge, passion, enthusiastic staff and good business sense. It’s not easy, but for those who succeed they offer their customers a fantastic service and a view into a (wine) world their customers just love to be a part of.”
