Following the passing of owner Peter Hall in October 2025, the Hall family has announced plans to sell Breaky Bottom Vineyard.
Based in East Sussex, the 15-acre vineyard is best known for its traditional-method sparkling wines and the chalk slopes that make up the estate.
Hall’s home since the 1960s, the estate was one of the early pioneers of English wine, producing an average of 10,000 bottles per year, with peaks of 20,000 bottles.
Hall’s first foray into winemaking began in the early 1970s, when he planted Müller-Thurgau and Seyval Blanc.
In the 1990s, however, the winemaker switched to Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Meunier, turning his focus to sparkling wine.
Now, in a decision described as “difficult and painful”, the family has put the vineyard up for sale through estate agent Knight Frank.
On the decision, Toby Hall, Peter’s youngest son, commented: “Our dream was to continue the magic that dad created here, but multiple practical considerations mean that we have now, reluctantly and sadly, accepted that we need to offer the vineyard and farm for sale.
“The future custodian of these precious acres has a wonderful opportunity to build on the Breaky Bottom legacy and to create stories to match those that have lifted and inspired our own lives, and the lives of all those who have driven up and over the Downs to Breaky Bottom.”
