A handful of drinks brands and retailers have joined a new movement to reduce harmful drinking.

Led by the International Alliance for Responsible Drinking (IARD), the new Global Standards Coalition has been signed by 80 businesses, including Spar, The Whisky Exchange and the Retail Alcohol Standards Group UK. Existing IARD members such as Pernod Ricard, AB InBev, Heineken and Moët Hennessy are also participating.

As part of the collaboration, all signatories have pledged to put in place policies to tackle harmful drinking, for example, by working to prevent the sale of alcohol to underage or intoxicated people.

Henry Ashworth, CEO and president, IARD, said: “We are proud to be leading this initiative and it will be pivotal in driving change in society through public and private partnership as part of a whole-of-society approach.

“We invite others to join us in this global initiative to reduce harmful drinking. By harnessing our resources alongside those of policy makers, regulators, healthcare professionals, and societal leaders, we can accelerate positive downwards trends in underage drinking.”
