Bijou Wine, the Languedoc-Roussillon producer, has now extended its range with a “unique blend” from Provence, which has been created to tap into continued global demand for pale rose.

Ciel de Lilac is a Provencal blend comprising solely red grape varieties, which allows for more structure and weight in the blend, according to the producer. The grapes were night harvested from two vineyards located high in the hills for increased acidity and aromatics. Grenache represents almost two thirds of the blend.

The resulting wine is one with a sweet cherry colour with flavours of grape fruits and wild strawberries, according to the producer. Bijou also said the wine will age well and will combine well with most foods.

Chris Ellis, who oversees the Bijou Wine operation in Provence, said that although 2017 was a devastating year for most of Provence in terms of volume, the winemaking team was “extremely pleased” with the quality of the grapes.

He said: “The strong 30 year-old bush vine saved the situation this year. Despite low yields, the fruit retained high acidity levels and has enabled us to produce a delicious and complex wine. I know the team will never forget 2017, the sleepless nights and the extremely hard work. Overall we are very pleased with the final result.”
