The Ardbeg distillery is expanding to increase capacity to 2.4 million litres a year, in order to keep up with demand.

The LVMH-owned Ardbeg whisky has been distilled on the Hebridean island of Islay since 1815, and is known for its smoky and peaty flavours.

Ardbeg will see its number of stills double to four, to help it meet growing global demand for its whisky.

The multi-million project, funded by distillery owner, The Glenmorangie Company, is due to start work this year, with completed expected in 2019.

Sales of Ardbeg are believed to have grown year-on-year since the distillery was reopened by the Glenmorangie Company in 1997; both whisky brands have sat under the ownership of LVMH since 2004.

The announcement follows the news that Glenmorangie plans to build its own new still house to accommodate new stills, in addition to the six it currently uses.

The new Ardnahoe distillery is due to start production this spring, and in addition, producer Kilchoman revealed plans last year to double its capacity while Laphroaig also plans to add more stills to its operation.
