Bottle to save 10,000 tonnes of glass a year

Glassmaker O-I has produced a 50cl beer bottle which it says weighs a third less than those currently used as standard by the brewing industry.

The move follows interest from other brewers in bottles the manufacturer has produced for Adnams and Marston's.

The new bottle weighs 300g and figures from the Waste Resources Action Programme indicate that a bottle at its weight would save over 10,000 tones of glass a year - and associated saving in energy consumption and transport - if adopted across the industry.

Paul McLavin, UK sales manager for O-I, said: "This demonstrates our commitment to the environmental improvement of our industry and our customers' businesses.

"The benefits proved by the Adnams development and the subsequent use of this technology by Marston's are now available to all."
