Climate change in the vineyard gets the juices flowing

Top Californian climate scientists are investigating climate change and how it will affect grape-growing in the region on behalf of the Napa Valley Vintners' Association.

David Graves of Saintsbury, who along with Cain winemaker Chris Howell was instrumental in getting the research running, says: "There is so much rampant misinformation about the effects of climate change. Some people will benefit, but to be confident that you will be OK is delusional. We have made a big investment in teaching people about varieties that we grow.

"Imagine if all of a sudden we said Torrontés is going to be our new great white variety in Carneros. We have got everybody expecting to drink Chardonnay, they can say Chardonnay, and they just want to have something with dinner. All the cultural knowledge has to change, and then all the knowledge of your consumers."

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle – which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
