Diageo under fire for beer duty position

Diageo could be forced to leave the British Beer & Pub Association because of its stance on beer duty.

The spirits giant, which also produces Guinness, is calling on the government to rebalance duty levels on all forms of alcohol – a move which would result in more taxation on beer.

The call has prompted anger among BBPA members, who have long campaigned for a fairer treatment for beer. Molson Coors said Diageo’s position was “self serving”.

Diageo is reported to have offered to accept a reduced role within the BBPA, or to resign, ahead of a discussion later today (Friday) about its future involvement with the trade body.
