Prowein will not return until 2021
The organiser of Prowein has announced that the event will not take place at a later date in 2020.
The wine trade fair was scheduled to take place in Düsseldorf from March 15-17. However, Messe Düsseldorf was forced to cancel it due to fears over the spread of the novel coronavirus.
Any hopes that it might be pushed back to a later slot in the year have now been dashed, as Messe Düsseldorf revealed that Prowein will not reappear until 2021.
“We have taken this decision in in-depth dialogue with our partner associations and key players in the industry,” said managing director Erhard Wienkamp. “The special challenge here was there is only a very tight “trade fair window” open for the wine industry – one which is additionally narrowed down by the insecure situation created by the coronavirus
“Against this background the decision is the only correct conclusion to be drawn – all in the interest of the wine and spirits industry.”
Prowein 2021 will take place from March 21-23.
Monika Reule, managing director at the German Wine Institute, added: “We expressly welcome that Messe Düsseldorf was courageous enough to take this step, which is entirely in the interest of the wine industry.
“Weighing all the benefits and drawbacks Messe Düsseldorf has reacted in a considerate, prudent and right way to our mind.”
There have now been almost 100,000 cases of the novel coronavirus worldwide, and the death toll has gone past the 3,300 mark. All but one of Germany's 16 states have had confirmed cases of the coronavirus.
