Simpsons Wine Estate releases its first English Sparkling wine

Simpsons Wine Estate in Kent has released its first English Sparkling wine.

The estate, which was set up by Charles and Ruth Simpson in 2014, is situated in the North Downs area of Kent.

Canterbury Rose 2016 is a rose sparkling wine made from 100% Pinot Noir grapes, all from vines planted by the Simpsons.

The wines are made using the methode traditionnelle, whereby following the secondary fermentation in the bottle, the wine is aged on its lees for fifteen months prior to disgorgement with a further six months on cork.

Canterbury Rose is the first Simpsons English sparkling wine to be released from the producer’s inaugural 2016 harvest.

Ruth Simpson said: “We have settled for nothing less than the finest parcels of land in southern England to plant our vines for Canterbury Rose. Just as one our French Estate, Domaine Sainte Rose in the Languedoc, we have always pursued the purest, truest flavours. We opened our state-of-the-art winery in 2016 – the same year as our inaugural vintage. Now the time has arrived to unveil our fresh approach to winemaking with the exciting release of our first English sparkling wine.”

Canterbury Rose 2016 is delicately pink with a fine mousse and a soft, rose petal and fresh strawberry sorbet nose. The wine is described as having a creamy, rounded texture with crisp red berry flavours and a refined finish.

The retail price is £210 (per case of six bottles). The wine will be available through the Simpsons Wine Estate website, and selected independent retailers and local restaurants.
