Berkmann Wine Cellars to launch Canevel Prosecco in the UK
Berkmann Wine Cellars has been appointed as the UK representative for the joint venture between Masi Agricola and Canevel (Prosecco di Valdobbiadene).
Masi Agricol of Valpolicella acquired 60% of Canevel in 2016 as a joint venture with Carlo Caramel, son of the founder, who maintains ownership of 40% of the company. The Canevel brand is now to launch in the UK through Berkmann Wine Cellars.
Raffaele Boscaini, marketing director of Masi, said: “Prosecco’s name is very strong, certainly stronger than any individual brand with consumers often asking for ‘a glass of Prosecco’. By focussing on individual high quality terroirs of Conegliano-Valdobbiadene and Asolo, and by integrating the whole production chain, Prosecco can be taken seriously as a high-quality wine of terroir and characteristics of each individual vineyard can be brought out.”
Alex Hunt MW of Berkmann, said: “Canevel differentiates itself clearly from the sea of mass-market Prosecco not only through sheer quality, but also by presenting a range of specific terroir expressions down to single cru level. The existence of zero-dosage wine in the line-up is testament to their confidence in the raw material, and with Masi now adding their expertise to the mix, Canevel has the makings of a truly compelling premium Prosecco producer.”
Carlo Caramel, chairman at Canevel Spumanti, said: “For Canevel, the partnership with Masi represents the chance to become part of a leading platform, which will enable synergies and additional resources to be made us of at several levels of the value chain, without changing the nature of our brand and the company identity which we have built up over almost 40 years.”
The Canevel estate is comprised of 26 hectares, of which 15 are planted to grapes. Soils have a very ancient origin and are characterised by the presence of moraines. The family-run estate was founded in 1979 and produces premium sparkling wines, in particular those of Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG, with a turnover of approximately 4.5 million Euros and 850,000 bottles. Canevel is strongly focussed on creating its cru wines, from its own vineyards, such as the Vigneto del Fae Spumante Dosaggio Zero Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG.
