The Vineyard Cellars takes on Somnium and Revana Estate wines
The Vineyard Cellars has been appointed exclusive UK agent for two Napa Valley boutique wineries: Somnium and Revana Estate.
The specialist Californian importer is taking on the two wineries – both of which are specialists in Cabernet Sauvignon – and helping to introduce the brands to consumers outside of the US for the first time. The UK will be the sole market outside of California for these wines.
Somnium produces just one red wine and Revana makes a small number of Cabernet expressions; only 60 bottles of Somnium and 48 bottles of each wine from Revana will be available for the UK market. The wines are destined for independent merchants and fine dining establishments and will be priced between £76 and £132 per bottle.
Somnium is owned by Danica Patrick, who is described as “one of the leading lights in the US motorsports scene” with Aaron Pott, who has made wine at some of California and France’s top properties. The winery’s six-acre Howell Mountain estate is hand-farmed and organic, displaying volcanic rock soil and small microclimates. The vineyards are planted at an altitude of 1,300 feet with western-facing slopes benefitting from direct sunlight and early morning fog. The 2014 Somnium Cabernet Sauvignon spent 20 months in 100% oak barrels. Production is very small: the 2014 vintage produced just 210 cases.
The Revana Estate vineyard is located in St Helena, “an ideal spot for growing Cabernet Sauvignon”, according to the importer, because of its moderate temperatures and combination of warm days and cool nights. The Estate comprises nine separate blocks totalling nine acres, with each block farmed and vinified separately. The estate was founded by cardiologist Dr Revana and the winemaker is Thomas Brown, who became known for the Cabernet Sauvignons he made for Schrader Cellars.
James Hocking, wine director at The Vineyard Cellars, said: “We are thrilled to have been chosen to represent Somnium and Revana Estate, two of Napa’s star wineries. Over the last 18 months we have seen the appetite for Napa Cabernets grow significantly, despite the economic downturn, with our top ten wines often selling out in a matter of days from release date.”
Somnium Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 has an rrp of £131.20; Revana Estate wines range from £76.20 to £132.00. The wines will be available to taste at The Golden State Tasting in London on May 14.
