James Davis MW heads new buying team at Adnams

Former Tesco wine buying manager James Davis MW has been appointed commercial director for Adnams’ beers, wines and spirits team.

The Suffolk brewer has been steadily increasing its retail estate and ecommerce arm in recent years and has now bolstered its team to accelerate BWS sales growth.

Davis had held senior roles at Tesco and Greene King and is one of only 369 Masters of Wine in the world.

He said: “I am excited to join a growing business and brilliant team of people, it’s also great to be able to work with fantastic brands across wine, beer and spirits. As an East Anglian resident, I have always admired Adnams as a local employer and business.

“I believe we have a real opportunity to develop our wine business for customers, particularly, across the various business channels within Adnams. I’m looking forward to continuing to develop the portfolio of Adnams Selection branded wines, which customers recognise for their outstanding quality and good value for money.”

Alastair Marshall and Rob Chase have retired from their roles at Adnams.

Dan Kirby, who has worked for Adnams since he was 18 and was most recently manager of the store in Southwold, but has now been promoted to buyer, joins Davis in the new-look team. Lydia Redfearn, assistant Wine Buyer, will support them.

Kirby said: “Having worked alongside the previous team, I have soaked up their knowledge but also bring energy and a forward-thinking approach to hunting out modern and interesting wines. Working across Adnams stores has also equipped me with a deep understanding into what our customers want and enjoy. I’m particularly looking forward to blending this knowledge with my creativity to select wines that will strengthen the range.”

Karen Hester, chief operating officer at Adnams, added: “We’re delighted to welcome a qualified Master of Wine to the company. James brings with him a wealth of experience and knowledge. Together with Dan, who has incredible enthusiasm and real insight into the wines Adnams’ customers love, we believe that the team will continue to build our wine offering, positively adding to our reputation as a retailer of great wines at fantastic value.”
