Four Pillars releases limited edition that ‘smells like gin and tastes like Christmas’

13 October, 2017

Four Pillars Australian gin is releasing a limited number of bottles of its Christmas Gin in the UK for the first time.

The gin, made using “distilled Christmas puddings”, will be available from the end of November.

The idea for the gin came from a family tradition of co-founder Cameron Mackenzie, whose mum used to make Christmas puddings on Australia’s Derby Day while the rest of the family watched the horse racing.

Mackenzie has updated the tradition by putting puddings into the botanical basket of the Four Pillars still to make the gin over a base of juniper, cinnamon, star anise, coriander seed and angelica.

The result is blended with a second gin which has been aged in Muscat wine barrels that are over 100 years old.

They include two 125-year-old ex-William Grant whisky barrels that, before arriving at the Four Pillars distillery, held Rutherglen Muscat for 80 years.

A “slight tweak” of Rutherglen Muscat is then added for extra richness.

For the 2017 version, the Four Pillars team have also added a small amount of Muscat which has been maturing at the distillery in old puncheons that used to hold aged Pedro Ximenez from the Barossa Valley.

UK distributor Love Drinks said the resulting gin “smells like gin and tastes like Christmas”.
