Waitrose adds half bottles to redesigned Blueprint own-label range

Waitrose has launched the first phase of its redesigned mid-tier range of own label wines, within which it is introducing six half-bottle versions of the bestsellers in the range.

Waitrose Blueprint Wines have been redesigned with blue and white labels in order to create a strong group identity for the wines. The back label of each bottle states: “Waitrose Blueprint wines are crafted to reflect the world’s classic regions and styles.”

There are 38 bottles in the range, within which there are now six half bottles Prices for the 75cl wines range from £5.99 to £8.99.

The 37.5cl half bottle line up comprises a White Burgundy at £4.99, a Pinot Grigio from Italy at £3.49, a Reserve Claret at £3.49, an Argentinian Malbec at £4.49 and a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, priced at £4.49.

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
