Aldi launches Featherweight low calorie and low abv wines

07 August, 2017

Aldi has released a new Featherweight collection of wines to address the trend for lower calorie and lower alcohol wines.

The Featherweight range comprises: a Sauvignon Blanc, an Italian Pinot Grigio, a Merlot and a White Zinfandel. Each are 5.5% abv and priced at £2.99 a bottle.

Tony Baines, joint managing director of corporate buying at Aldi UK, said: “We have seen over the last year a real appetite from wine drinkers in the UK for lower calorie and abv wines to moderate their alcohol intake. At Aldi we ensure that we are offering our customers the products they want and so have introduced our Featherweight wines as a lighted choice for our shoppers. These bottles have been carefully selected by our expert buying team for the UK market and as with all Aldi products are amazing quality at great prices.”

Featherweight Sauvignon Blanc, which is described as having aromas of gooseberry and mint leaf, has just 55 calories per 12.5cl glass, compared with 102 calories for a standard Sauvignon Blanc. Similarly the Merlot has 59 calories versus 101 calories for a standard 12.5cl glass of Merlot.

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
