Majestic reveals celebrity winemaker trio

Majestic has enlisted three celebrity winemakers to create their own ‘signature dish’, which will then be bottled and sold in stores.

The retailer has chosen rising oenology stars: Marc Kent, Christophe Mongeot and Kevin O’Brian to design their own “perfect wines” for the palates of Britain, while also giving them free-reign to create blends of their own choice.

The three are already well-known to many wine fans as the makers behind Chocolate Block (Kent), Minuty (Mongeot) and Kangarilla Road (O’Brian).

Richard Weaver, buying and merchandising director, said: “Anyone can take a selection of ingredients and make a meal, but it is the top quality chefs that have the magic sauce that can make something truly special. It is the same with these wines – they are brimming with the personality of the winemakers and the result it exceptionally unique.”

The wine labels also celebrate the individuals behind the wines, each adorned with a black and white signed picture of the winemaker.

He added: “These wines are a celebration of the individual’ showing how top winemakers have an IT factor. We deliberately approached brilliant winemakers who produce ‘cult’ Majestic wines that our customers love and asked them to create something unique that they are proud to put their own names on.”

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
