Palmers London Dry Gin launched

One of the UK’s oldest gin producing families has released an eponymous brand to celebrate 200 years of distilling.

The release of Palmers London Dry Gin marks two centuries since the Palmer family began distilling in the Midlands.

All the stills at the family’s iconic Langley distillery are named after important ladies in its history and the new gin is produced in Angela, a 1,000-litre still built in 1903 and named after a descendent of the company’s founder, WH Palmer.

His great-great-great-granddaughter Natalie Wallis said: “We wanted to produce our own gin to celebrate six generations and 200 years in the business and we are very excited to launch Palmers London Dry Gin.

“It has been named after my grandmother, Angela Palmer, who was a big gin lover and a real character in the family, so it has been a real honour to produce this gin in her memory. Our signature serve is pink gin, served with Angostura and soda, which was one of her favourites.”

The botanicals – juniper, coriander, angelica, cassia, liquorice, orris and grapefruit – are steeped overnight in 100% English wheat spirit while being warmed, allowing the botanicals to release their essential oils.

Master distiller Rob Dorsett said: “The resulting gin has juniper in abundance on the nose blended with hints of coriander seed and a subtle dryness complemented by an edge of sweetness from orris.

“On the palate there are spice and citrus notes from the cassia bark and grapefruit, while the juniper lingers into the dryness of angelica finishing with further citrus notes. Palmers London Dry Gin clean, fresh and lightly balanced with pleasant citrus and dry notes in the background.”

Palmers London Dry Gin will be available to buy on Master of Malt for £28.

Reasons to be cheerful

I would like to think my outlook on things is generally optimistic. Perhaps that’s a natural consequence of working with something designed to give pleasure. But recently it has become increasingly difficult to ignore a creeping sense of negativity pervading the British wine trade.
