Hattingley extends into spirits

07 March, 2017

Hattingley Wines has launched its first spirit under a new sub-brand, HV Spirits.

The Hampshire-based English wine producer has revealed the first drink under this brand name is Aqua Vitae, which is made from distilled Chardonnay.

Marketing manager Rebecca Fisher told OLN: “It’s made from the juice rather than the skins. We didn’t want to get into making second-tier wines but we had some good quality juice so we decided to distill it.

“The flavour profile is quite grown up and it has complex aromatics. There are various different ways you can drink it. Some might like to put it in the freezer and drink it cold, but we have also been looking at cocktails.”

The 40% abv drink will be launched this Spring, priced at £45 a bottle. It has initial listings in local independent retailers in the Hampshire area.

The producer is looking at other drinks and Fisher confirmed a brandy will be released later this year.

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
