Berry Bros releases Ltd Ed label for Good Ordinary Claret

17 February, 2017

Berry Bros & Rudd has released an exclusive new wine label for its bestselling Good Ordinary Claret.

The label, which has been created by London-based designer Luke Edward Hall, depicts Bacchus, the Roman god of wine, in Luke’s inimitable style.

The limited edition label is now ready to buy, but only 4,000 bottles are available. This is the second limited edition label for the brand, following last year’s collaboration with British designer, Paul Smith.

Geordie Willis, creative director, said: “Luke is one of London’s most exciting young designers and as the UK’s oldest wine and spirits merchant, we enjoy this juxtaposition between the old and new.

“This is the second year we have commissioned a new design for our Good Ordinary Claret. We try and offer as little brief as possible so the designer is given free rein. The label is therefore a product of their full creative expression meaning we’re just as excited to see the final results.”

Luke Edward Hall added: “I was delighted to be offered the opportunity to design a bottle label for Berry Bros & Rudd’s iconic Good Ordinary Claret. As a fan of ‘Graeco-Roman myths and legends’ since childhood, it was natural for me to illustrate a label inspired by Bacchus, god of winemaking and his wild Baccanalian parties. I wanted it to be very colourful and eye-catching too – I used a variety of my favourite materials to create the design – paints, pencils, chalks and pastels.”

Richard Hemming MW: beware inverse snobbery

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle – which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
