The Torres family creates its first Catalan sparkling wine

The Torres family is introducing its first sparkling wine produced in Catalonia using the ‘traditional method’.

Cuvee Esplendor Vardon Kennett 2013 originates from Torres’ high-altitude vineyards in the Penedes, located at more than 500 metres above sea level, which is thought to give the wine exceptional freshness and elegance.

The blend comprises Pinot Noir and Chardonnay as well as a small amount of Xarel-lo, which are all carefully selected and hand-harvested. The sparkling wine has been aged for 30 months in the bottle, and consequently it will be aimed at specialist stores and top end restaurants.

Mireia Torres Maczassek, who is a fifth generation family member and the project’s technical director, said: “We wanted to make a sparkling wine with a distinctly individual style, emphasizing freshness and elegance from a female perspective. The project is truly unique, very special, and it paves the way for a new concept in sparkling wines.”

Esplendor Cuvee Extra Brut 2013 is described as being “fresh and lively” and a faithful reflection of the vintage, the vineyard and the varieties”.

The wine is also a homage to Vardon Kennett, a Briton who embraced the Penedes. The family wished to pay tribute to this Briton who lived on the property during the early 19th century. Kennett was born in 1781 and as a maritime trader he visited Barcelona, where he was captivated by its wines and culture. He changed career and began selling and exporting local wines to England. He also married and began a new life in the vineyards of the area.

Vardon Kennett Esplendor will be available in the UK early in 2017.
