Spar adds premium tier to Prosecco as demand soars

10 October, 2016

Spar is set to launch a new Spar-branded Prosecco to offer shoppers the chance to trade up.

The premium Spar Prosecco Speciale, which will be priced at £9, offers its shoppers the opportunity to go for a more luxurious variant than its already “hugely successful” Perlezza Prosecco. The launch is expected to bring Spar an extra £350,000 in retail sales.

Cath Mcilwham, Spar UK head of brand, said: “As shoppers more frequently trade up to premium products during the festive season – either for themselves or as gifts – the launch of our Prosecco Speciale will come at just the right time.

“Sales of Prosecco outpace Champagne in the UK, and Prosecco represents 64% of all sparkling wine sales, so we are confident our new launch will tap the trend this festive season.”

The award-winning Spar Perlezza Prosecco is one of the fastest growing and biggest selling sparkling wine brands in the UK impulse channel excluding wine specialists, according to Nielen data.

“Alcohol represents a great opportunity for Spar retailers to boost sales in the run up to the festive season, so it’s essential that we at Spar Brand are offering them a credible, great-tasting range at excellent value prices,” said McIlwham.

“According to Him! research, 11% of shoppers choose to buy alcohol in a convenience store over the range of other options in the marketplace, and this is growing year on year,” she said.

What’s more, 5% of customers now buy alcohol for gifting in a convenience store. Spar is catering for this market with its range of gifting options, including the return of its successful Perlezza Prosecco and Chocolate Gift Pack (RRP £5).

Also this year, Spar has chosen its 12 Wines that are perfect for Christmas. They are:

  • Châteauneuf-du-Pape
  • Les Trois Couronnes
  • Champagne Marquis Belrive
  • Valpolicella Ripasso
  • Chablis
  • Prosecco Speciale
  • Provence Rosé
  • Primitivo
  • Touraine Sauvignon Blanc
  • Valdepenas Gran Reserva
  • Rioja Ursa Maior Reserva
  • Sancerre

The campaign name There’s A Beer For That may have got cynics like me trying to think of things there wasn’t a beer for, but broadly speaking it was a force for good.
