Aldi teams up with Denbies to move into English sparkling wine

Aldi has teamed up with Denbies Wine Estate in Surrey to launch its first English sparkling wine.

The Chalk Valley Quality English sparkling wine will retail at £14.99 and has been developed exclusively for Aldi shoppers by the supermarket’s buying team and Denbies’ winemakers.

The sparkler goes on sale at from October 2 and is part of Aldi’s bid to become "the UK’s go-to retailer when it comes to sparkling wine".

Aldi, which was named Multiple Wine Retailer of the Year and won the gong for best supermarket at the 2016 Drinks Retailing Awards, sold more than 5 million bottles of bubbly in 2015.

The Chalk Valley Quality English Sparkling Wine is described as “a high quality, dry and refreshing wine full of citrus aromas, a hint of flora and brioche, thanks to a higher percentage of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes than some English sparklers, with a creamy texture, long, zesty finish and finely balanced acidity which is sure to prove popular with Aldi’s fizz fans”.

Tony Baines, joint managing director of corporate buying at Aldi, said: “The English sparkling wine market is booming as more and more Brits are recognising it as a world class product, worthy of going head to head with the finest Proseccos and Champagnes.

Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle – which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
