Eat 17 Spar opens Whitstable store

12 July, 2016

A collection of independently-owned Spar stores famed for its drinks offering is expanding out of London for the first time.

Eat 17, a small group of eateries and convenience stores, will open a store in the seaside town of Whitstable in Kent on 15 July.

Local ales, beers and other drinks are a feature of the London-based stores in Walthamstow and Hackney, and the new Whitstable Spar store will follow this model with a strong focus on local and regional products.

Eat 17’s Hackney store secured the Convenience Drinks retailer of the Year award at this year’s Drinks Retailing Awards by OLN, and it has seen huge success with concepts such as wine on tap and a strong craft beer range.

The company also created the much-loved ‘Eat 17 Bacon Jam’ family, which is sold through the stores as well as in supermarkets nationally.

Eat 17 owner James Brundle said: “We are really excited to be able to acquire this site. Whitstable is a great fit for our brand – the perfect mix of tradition and trendiness.”
The Whitstable store will also open a serve-over ice cream parlour in August using ingredients sourced in Kent.

Eat 17 will work in partnership with Blakemore Trade Partners. Blakemore sales director Neil Mercer said: “We’ve been on the lookout for the next set of Eat 17 sites and delighted to open this new one in Whitstable. The Spar and Eat 17 brands have proven to work successfully and flawlessly alongside each other since the concept first opened in 2010. The business has moved onto the next stage and we are very excited about the future.”

One of the most fascinating stories in wine, fit to stand alongside the Judgement of Paris, is that of Rudy Kurniawan, a man who managed to fool friends, auction houses and experts into believing they were drinking some of the world’s most expensive wines.
