French co-ops unite for marketing drive

Twelve of France’s leading cooperatives have joined forces to launch a marketing drive designed to increase consumer and trade knowledge about the country’s wines.

The coops represent 4,000 growers and have a combined annual production of 200 million bottles.

They are spread across all of France’s key winegrowing regions and produce a wide range of red, white, rosé, Champagne, dessert wine and cremants.

The name for the group is Marques & Coop and a recent London tasting attracted the likes of Jancis Robinson MW.

At the tasting one of the coop leaders, Thomas Leclere of Champagne Chassenay d’Arce, told OLN: “Marques & Coop is born from managing directors of coops working together collaboratively to show that the brands we produce can be compared to the negotiants and the small estates that everybody knows.

“Behind these brands there’s a new adventure. We want to give the best of the terroirs and knowledge.”

Richard Hemming MW: beware inverse snobbery

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle – which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
