Waitrose expands in-store draft beer pump concept

01 July, 2016

Waitrose has installed its draft beer pump concept into a second store.

The retailer opened its first store in Worcester this week; the outlet will be within the top ten largest Waitrose stores in the UK.

It now sits as only the second of its stores (and the first outside of London) to include a draft beer pump, which is supplied by the Purity Brewing Company in Alcester.

The pump is located in the shop's own bar, which is a new concept seen in just seven Waitrose stores across the country; these enable customers to buy beer or wine by the glass along with deli platters and tapas.

Darryl Hinksman, Purity Brewing Company's director of sales, said: "Shoppers will be able to enjoy two different styles of beer as we will be alternating them between Longhorn; an American style rye IPA, and Lawless; an unfiltered hoppy lager, currently gold medal holder from the 2015 World Beer Awards for best German style Pilsner."

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
