Hogs Back's rare hop used to make exclusive brew for Waitrose

28 June, 2016

Waitrose is exclusively listing a single hop beer made with a rare variety by Surrey brewer Hogs Back.

The 4% abv Farnham White is made with Farnham White Bine grown in the brewery hop garden.

The variety brought affluence to the area in which Hogs Back is based in the 17th century.

It claims to have rescued the variety from “near extinction” and to be the only brewer in the world using it.

Waitrose is selling 50cl bottles of the beer for £1.99.

Hogs Back managing director Rupert Thompson said: “The Farnham White Bine hop once made our small part of Surrey world-renowned, and the whole community has welcomed its return.

“We’re very pleased to be bringing it to beer-lovers beyond our heartland.”

Richard Hemming MW: beware inverse snobbery

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle – which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
