Waitrose adds Spar buyer Daphne Teremetz to buying team

21 June, 2016

Waitrose has bolstered its buying team with Spar’s Daphne Teremetz after Cat Lomax left the business to join Majestic Wine.

Teremetz has been responsible for a successful overhaul of Spar’s wine range and is now in charge of buying Bordeaux, Regional France, Alsace and South America for Waitrose.

Victoria Mason, who launched Outdoor Horticulture in Waitrose, has also joined the wine team.

She will be responsible for South Africa, Loire, bag in box, small bottles, low-alcohol and kosher.

Meanwhile Rebecca Hull MW has moved into a full time buying role and taken on the Champagne and Sparkling categories in addition to her current responsibility for England & Wales.

That helps the retailer maintain its MW count after Ken Mackay MW left the business.

The full line-up of Waitrose buyers, led by Pierpaolo Petrassi MW, is as follows:

Rebecca Hull MW - Champagne, Sparkling, England and Wales

Maria Elener - Italy, Rhône, Eastern Europe, Austria and Other World

Nick Room - Spain, Portugal, Burgundy, Fortified and Sweet Wines

Alexandra Mawson - New Zealand, Australia, USA and Rosé

Daphne Teremetz - Bordeaux, Regional France, Alsace and South America

Victoria Mason - South Africa, Loire, Bag in Box, Small Bottles, Low Alcohol and Kosher

Xenia Irwin MW - Buyer for Waitrose Cellar.com and Germany

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
