Real wine month embraced by independent wine merchants

The UK’s wine industry is showing its support for “real wine” by backing the Real Wine Month through April and embracing the event on Twitter.

Consumer awareness of real wine – wines made organically, biodynamically and naturally
– is growing in the UK as wine retailers have been boosting and highlighting their ranges.

As part of the Real Wine Month campaign, selected wines will be poured by the glass or featured on wine lists at more than 200 restaurants and independent retailers across the UK and Ireland throughout April.

Sam Brown, who runs Vino Vero in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex, with his wife, Charlie, confirmed that consumer interest in these wines is growing.

“It’s partly due to an increase in national press coverage about issues such as high sulphite levels in wine and the use of pesticides,” he told OLN.

“We have always focused on what we call low intervention, or real wines, here and they account for about 55% of our stock, with a lot of our best- sellers falling into that category.”

The store supported Real Wine Month last year but for 2016 it has ramped up activity by dedicating its window display to the event and offering discounts on some wines.

It also has tasting events planned.

Brown added: “A lot of people don’t know the term ‘real wine’, but when we talk about it we describe it as how wine used to be made years ago, so therefore the wines are more authentic.”

Many other retailers are getting behind this campaign. Wine merchant Bottle Apostle, which has stores across London, said it plans to showcase organic, biodynamic and natural wines made by top artisan producers from around the world.

“For the entire month of April we’ll have a rotating selection
of more than 20 of these wines available to sample through our Enomatic tasting machines,” the retailer said.

The Real Wine Month campaign will be bolstered by a two-day Real Wine Fair in London. It will take place at Tobacco Dock on April 17 and 18 and will feature more than 140 winemakers from around the world.

Highlights will include seminars, an on-site wine shop and natural wine bar and a restaurant called The Unfiltered Dog.

The fair operates a “two years on, one year off ” policy.
