Chapel Down raises £1.7m to expand Curious Drinks business

04 April, 2016

Chapel Down Group has closed its equity crowdfunding campaign for its beer and cider business, Curious Drinks, having exceeded its targets.

The British winemaker has raised £1,7m from its campaign, which went live on the Seedrs crowdfunding platform in October 2015, which means it has exceeded its original £1m target by 71%.

One third of the money raised came from investors in Kent, which is where the group’s Curious Drinks business is based.

The new funds will be used to construct a state-of-the-art brewery and visitor attraction in Ashford, Kent. Construction for this is expected to begin in Summer 2016 and will be fully operational by Spring 2017.

Investors have been offered a discount on beer and free tours of the facilities.

Frazer Thompson, chief executive of Chapel Down and Curious Drinks, said: “The success of our Curious Drinks crowdfunding campaign is further testament to the revolution taking place in the British beer business. Customers want great beer and we’re delighted that they love Curious as much as we do. We are pleased to welcome nearly 900 new shareholders, who we know will all become fantastic brand ambassadors.

“Since launching Curious Drinks we have been thrilled by its rapid success. But to have earned the support of895 shareholders who believe in the brand and who want to support us on our journey with their hard earned cash is truly humbling.”

The shops that stand out from the madding crowd

The judges met last week to sort out the winners in the independent categories of our 2018 Drinks Retailing Awards.
