Sainsbury’s reports best quarter in two years

Sainsbury’s has reported its first rise in sales in two years, as it continues its focus on phasing out multi-buy promotions.

The retailer, which is currently the UK’s third-largest supermarket, said sales at stores open for more than one year (excluding fuel), rose 0.1% in the three months to 12 March. This rise compares with a 0.4% fall in like-for-like sales over Christmas.

Mike Coupe, Sainsbury’s chief executive, said market conditions continued to be competitive and food deflation is still having an impact on sales, but he added “we are making excellent progress implementing our strategy”.

The positive figures from the supermarket were aided by a rise in online grocery sales, which were up nearly 14% over the three month period.

The figures also represent the first time the supermarket has seen quarterly sales rise since Coupe took over the role in March 2014.
