Vilarnau Cava launches limited edition bottle designs

20 January, 2016

Leading Spanish Cava producer, Vilarnau is to launch two limited-edition labels for its Brut Reserva and Brut Reserva Rosado in the UK.

The new designs take their inspiration from the Catalan Trencadís mosaic style popular in Catalan modernism and used by architects such as Antoni Gaudi and Josep Maria Pujol.

Typical of the style is the use of broken pieces of ceramic tiles and dinnerware to create the mosaic.

The designs will be available to the UK off-trade in the next few weeks through Gonzalez Byass UK.

Ben Wyse, Vilarnau brand manager at Gonzalez Byass, said: “We first launched our limited edition Trencadís labels last year and they gave the range great stand out on shelf as well as being a talking point for anyone enjoying Vilarnau.

“Being situated so close to Barcelona, and the famous Parc Güell, which demonstrates this incredible design so well, it is a natural fit for us to recreate this artistic theme on our Vilarnau labels.”

Vilarnau Brut Reserva, Penedes DO, is produced using Macabeo, Parellada and Xarel-lo grapes, while the Vilarnau Brut Reserva Rosado, Penedes DO uses Trepat and Pinot Noir.

Cava sales fell 4% by volume in the off-trade last year, but Vilarnau is one of a number of producers driving the premiumisation of the category.

Richard Hemming MW: beware inverse snobbery

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle – which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
