Fromvineyardsdirect.com poaches Hefford from The Good Wine Shop

01 December, 2015

On-line drinks retailer, Fromvineyardsdirect.com, has appointed David Hefford as its new wine product manager.

Hefford joins from the buying team at West London-based wine merchant, The Good Wine Shop, where he oversaw a 1,000-strong wine list.

Previous experience includes eight years at Majestic, where he was twice awarded manager of the year, as well as stints at Oddbins and Threshers.

He also won the Vintners Bursary as a result of outstanding Level Three WSET results.

Hefford will work alongside Fromvineyardsdirect.com’s co-founder, Esme Johnstone.

Johnstone is a former co-owner of Château des Sours. He founded the online business in 2007 with Everyman Books publisher David Campbell, who holds a Légion d’Honneur and established the Guide Hachette des Vins in 1985.

Hefford said: “My move to fromvineyardsdirect.com was sparked by the fantastic opportunity the role offered to buy wines direct from European vineyards and to pass on the wines  – at exceptional prices – and the stories and passion behind them to customers.

“There is so much added-value in all of that, at every level.”

Hefford's ultimate ambition is to run his own winery in France.

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
