Ferdinand releases world's first Dry Riesling Vermouth

German gin brand Ferdinand has released the world’s first Dry Riesling Vermouth.

The vermouth has been created using the barrels from last year's Riesling infusion by master distiller Andreas Vallendar at his Avadis Distillery in Wincheringen in the Rhineland.

Ferdinand is also launching two tonics, a cucumber tonic and a dry tonic, both named after the Romantic writer, Dr John Polidori. Polidori was Lord Byron’s personal physician and the author of the first English language vampire story, The Vampyre.

Both the Dry Riesling Vermouth and Dr Polidori tonics are available in the UK exclusively through Amathus, which also distributes Ferdinand’s Saar Dry Gin.

Ferdinand’s Saar Dry Gin launched in the UK in the spring of 2014. It uses 30 botanicals including almond shell, hop blossom and ginger.

It won double gold at the 2015 San Francisco World Spirit Competition.

Ferdinand is a joint venture between Vallendar, Dorothee Zilliken from the VDP Forstmeister Geltz-Zilliken estate in Saarburg, and the Saarbrucken marketing company Capulet & Montague.

The company is named in honour of Royal Prussian District Forester Ferdinand Geltz, co-founder of the VDP Mosel Saar Ruwer Zulliken estate, which has been producing wine for some 270 years.

Richard Hemming MW: beware inverse snobbery

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle – which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
