Vintage cider joins Chaplin & Cork's range

16 September, 2015

C&C Group’s Chaplin & Cork’s speciality cider brand is adding a Somerset Vintage style to its range.

The new cider clocks in at a higher abv of 8.2% than the 6.8% abv Somerset Reserve and 5.2% Somerset Gold that are already on sale.

The medium dry Vintage cider is made with 100% juice from English cider apples at C&C’s Shepton Mallet Cider Mill.

It will be listed nationally in 50cl bottles by Tesco from October.

Brand Manager Holly Chadwick said. “We believe the new [cider] will appeal to the more discerning cider drinker who is willing to pay more for speciality brands.

“Consumer demand for speciality ciders is a growing trend and brands offering a premium proposition, such as the Chaplin & Cork’s range, are proving extremely popular.”

Nielsen figures show the speciality cider segment in growth of 12% in the year to July 18, accounting for 10% of the off-trade cider market.

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
