Rhone winemakers return to London after 15-year absence

07 April, 2015

A group of 15 winemakers from across the Rhône poured some of the region’s finest wines for buyers as it hosted its first UK tasting in 15 years.

Generic group Rhône Vignobles decided the time was right to return to London and show off wines from prestigious appellations such as Côte Rôtie, Condrieu, Châteauneuf-du- Pape, Saint Joseph and Crozes Hermitage.

President Alexandre Rousset- Rouard told OLN: “London is a city of worldwide importance. It’s an interesting place. It’s been 15 years. Enough time to decide to make a return.

“The UK is a market open to quality wines. There is a lot of competition but at the same time this is definitely a market for Rhône wines with a high quality philosophy about terroir

and authenticity.” He added: “We have a very good price per quality ratio, great terroir, great expressions – a great expression of Old World wines in terms of they are ripe but not overripe.

“You always have good freshness, good acidity. Like everywhere there has been an evolution of our wines. We focus more on terroir and use less oak than 15 years ago to give a better expression of the place.

“There’s a more controlled extraction on the wines for more elegance and finesse.”

Faith in fakes

One of the most fascinating stories in wine, fit to stand alongside the Judgement of Paris, is that of Rudy Kurniawan, a man who managed to fool friends, auction houses and experts into believing they were drinking some of the world’s most expensive wines.
