Corks Out adds a sixth store

20 March, 2015

Cheshire chain Corks Out is set to open a sixth store as founder Ruth Yates focuses on a concept combining a shop and wine bar.

The newcomer, in Knutsford, will open its doors in May after a two-year search for a suitable site, and Yates has already identified another property she would like to acquire for a seventh shop.

Yates said: “It’s got a later licence so will be a wine bar as well as a shop. That concept is really working well for us now. “We’ve had it at Stockton Heath for a few years and we are seeing good returns. We are doing something different to what restaurants and other wine bars do.

“We are offering 10 Champagnes by the glass and there are wines on Enomatic machines too. In most bars you only get house wine by the glass.

“We have been looking for two years, but this location is great. It’s around other independent shops so it’s vibrant.

“It is similar to Stockton Heath and has a south-facing garden and there’s a room upstairs for gourmet dinners as well.

“We’ve had a great response from the local shops and pubs in Knutsford. You would have thought they would view us as competition, but the area was crying out for a wine shop.”

She added: “I’ve got my eye on another site, but I don’t want to open two new shops in one year.

“The good thing is that all the shops have something different about them and they each deliver a specific proposition to the community.”

Yates opened the first Corks Out in Chester back in 2003 and has since grown the business to a chain of five shops – the other four in Alderley Edge, Stockton Heath, Timperley and Heswall – as well as an e-commerce site.

The shops that stand out from the madding crowd

The judges met last week to sort out the winners in the independent categories of our 2018 Drinks Retailing Awards. The results are top secret until the awards dinner on February 6 but it’s giving nothing away to report that the overall standard of those that will be revealed in the shortlist of finalists in the January issue of DRN is higher than it’s ever been.
