Glengoyne tour highlights impact of wood on whisky

Scotch whisky producer Glengoyne has unveiled a new tour experience designed to show the whisky’s close connection with wood.

Premium spirits design agency Contagious has produced a display which provides an insight into the colour, flavour and evaporation changes that occur across European and American oak sherry casks, bourbon barrels and refill casks.

Brand heritage and commercial manager Stuart Hendry said: “Something like 60-70% of our flavour comes from our wood.

“Our different Glengoyne expressions are crafted by combining different casks from Spain and the US, each of which bring their own characteristics.

“Even casks which seem identical in every way somehow bring their own unique style.”

Three new tours have been added to the distillery’s portfolio: a look inside its No 1 Warehouse; a chance for visitors to play malt master to produce their own 20cl bottle of 17-year-old; and sampling of a parade of gold medal-winning whiskies.

Tour prices range from £22.50 to £75.

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle – which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
