Heineken blames the rain for sales slump

Heineken blamed wet weather for a 4.1% drop in revenues for Western Europe during the third quarter of 2014.

Overall sales fell 1.5% to £4 billion as strong performances in Asia and Africa eased the pain of the slump in its European heartland.

"Amidst a volatile global environment and poor weather during the high selling season in Europe, we maintained top-line growth," said Jean-Francois van Boxmeer, chairman at Heineken, which supplies Bulmers, Strongbow, Kronenbourg and its eponymous brand among other to the UK trade.

Net profit for the third quarter was down 4.8% to £364 million.

Reasons to be cheerful

I would like to think my outlook on things is generally optimistic. Perhaps that’s a natural consequence of working with something designed to give pleasure. But recently it has become increasingly difficult to ignore a creeping sense of negativity pervading the British wine trade.
