Marks & Spencer set to take beer world by storm

Marks & Spencer has vowed to use its success at the International Beer Challenge 2014 as a springboard to taking the beer world by storm.

It was named Retailer of the Year after scooping five bronze medals, 10 silvers and a gold for its own-label submissions.

As she clutched her trophy Jenny Rea, BWS product developer at M&S, told OLN: “We have big long-term plans so hopefully we can build on this. It’s the beginning.

“We have been growing our beer range over the years and developing new and interesting things such as our single hop beer range. Our new Christmas lines are about to come out.

“We select beers from various brewers and make sure we have different styles and lots of regions. Ultimately the product has to deliver on quality and focus on the customers and what they want.”

Reasons to be cheerful

I would like to think my outlook on things is generally optimistic. Perhaps that’s a natural consequence of working with something designed to give pleasure. But recently it has become increasingly difficult to ignore a creeping sense of negativity pervading the British wine trade.
