Beautiful South visitor numbers rise 7%

Visitor numbers at the Wines of the Beautiful South tasting in London last week rose 7.3% on the 2013 figure.

The two-day event, showing off wines from Argentina, Chile and South Africa, attracted 1,223 visitors.

Organisers said the number of visitors that attended on both days rose 48% on the inaugural event last year.

Buyers from the likes of Tesco, Asda, Waitrose, Majestic, the Co-operative Group, Laithwaites, Spar, the Wine Society and Marks & Spencer were out in full force, sampling wines from 250 different producers.

An event spokesperson said: “We listened to the feedback from the inaugural show in 2013 and made improvements that we feel will continue to ensure quality visitors and a tasting that meets the needs of the trade in the UK and beyond.”

Wines of the Beautiful South will return to Kensington Olympia in 2016 as Wines of South Africa will focus on hosting its international show, Cape Wine, in 2015.

Wines of Chile and Wines of Argentina intend to hold a joint South American tasting in London in 2015 and the team is currently exploring ways to collaborate as Wines of the Beautiful South during London Wine Fair 2015.

Wines of the Beautiful South seminars will be held during ProWein in Düsseldorf next March.

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle – which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
